智利觀星?

To match the moon age (together with Savio and my schedules), Chile is out of consideration in summer 2012. Tibet is no good in summer. So I am inclined to go to Australia for more adventures.

今天在飛機上看到一篇講南喬治亞島的遊記，我對這個島的認知，還是基於30年前英阿褔克蘭群島戰爭，原來要從阿根庭乘遊輪過去，中間有40小時越過西風帶，要承受2倍12級風的驚濤駭浪，而島上遺下的，還是100年前的捕鯨或南極探險隊遺跡。

以我的情況去看，其實明年國際天文館會議後，最近的就是一海之隔的古巴，但美國沒有直航飛機

另外也可以到Florida Key體驗一下經常能推上1000倍目視的世界級視寧度.....

South Georgia is a popular Island which Antarctica cruise ships often visit. I had also been reading about Antarctica tours recently but most cruise tours take 12 days and above at least, and I will never have such long holiday during summer in southern hemisphere until I retire. I am most interested to see its big penguin colonies in this Island.

若12日也騰不出來，我看連西藏也不太夠，只能在拉薩四週走走。那在台灣感受一下3000海拔以上的星空是可以考慮的，只要越過霧線，在3000海拔以上，夏天的晴天率近乎百份百。去年星空派對不及清關，或許真的要把203APO運過去玩一次。

另外沒聽你計劃看極光的? 似乎這個也較易實現。

I have investigated a bit on this front also. The moon age and my holiday don't match except this Christmas. Also, we need very good weather. Weather in Northern Finland and Iceland are no good in December. So these two easy places are out of question.

The best weather seems to be in Alaska Fairbanks where Henry had been to in September some years ago. But the problem is that there seems to be not much to do if no aurora appears and I am left in the freezing cold dark place for a few days doing nothing except spending loads of money on the flight. The best times seem to be in September and March when you get some daylight for normal activities and also dark sky at night for aurora. But of course I cannot go in these months.

Seems to me that total solar eclipse is easier to see as it is observable as long as weather is good. But for aurora, you also need the sun to be more active in those few days. Not a problem if I live there but a big risk if I only stay for 1 week.

日食給我最大的體驗，是不能守株待兔，同樣在一個方圓數十公里的地方，可以一面是喜劇一面是悲劇，甚至在日食前一分鐘才因一片雲或雲裡一個洞，悲喜倒過來，那些一等數年，又或者08年華東那次本世紀最長的日全食，你我都同意就在數分鐘內定"生死"，因為沒有第二次了。

極光我想像應會好一點? 若看日食是考公開試，看極光是校內評分?

另一精采剌激的要算看流星雨，但你沒有這機遇了，98年我在興隆看流星雨，原來正日前一晚才是最精采，臨近天亮時每數秒便有一顆像閃光燈一樣，完全照亮地面人及景物的火流星，峰值數字好像每小時數千顆吧，那群荷蘭過來，20人帶了20噸器材的流星雨學會早上還興緻勃勃的打電話回老家報捷，怎知原來高峰移到歐洲去，每小時峰值數字上萬顆....

My Falkland trip doesn't quite work out this Christmas because of problems with flight arrangement......need to book earlier next year. Falkland is better in December rather than July. Forget Falkland for stargazing. The weather is not that promising. If I go there, it will be for the wildlife.

The government of Argentina is rather weak with very low public approval rating. May be it is a way to distract from the domestic problems, just like the war in the 1980s.
