The Squid in Fire (beta version)
After about 10 years of mobile astrophotography, I step into the era of remote observatory astrophotography. As a trial, I started everything in budget. I sent those less frequently used equipment I owned to a remote observatory in China, Gaoyazi Observatory. Gaoyazi Observatory is a less popular observatory in China and the management fee is less expensive. However, according to the meteorological data, the clear sky rate is high. This is the prime reason that I choose Gaoyazi Observatory. In order to test the sky quality of Gaoyazi Observatory, I deliberately choose a faint object OU4.
The learning curve of handling remote observatory for astrophtography is steep. It is somewhat different from mobile astrophotography. Luckily I have a long term photography buddy Allen walks with me. We conquer those technical problems one by one. No need to mention the remote control part, as a long time DSLR astrophotographer, using remote observatory and cooled mono camera etc. is a new challenge. After processed it for more than one week, I found it there were lots of technical problems for a newbie in this area. I found that the experience in processing astro-photos in a highly light polluted city, Hong Kong, is beneficiary. Although the sky quality of Gaoyazi Observatory is high, the amp glow and pattern noise are huge when imaging extremely faint objects. As a result, the S/N is low for OU4. In addition, the relatively high flat field requirement for mosaic, how to blend narrow band data together to form a color image etc. are non-trivial topics for me. Finally, I make this first light image, The Squid in Fire (beta version).
Location: Gaoyazi Observatory, Dabancheng, Xinjiang, China

拍攝資料:兩張併圖, (Ha + OIII) 24hrs, Skywatcher 120ED, Skywatcher 0.85x, QHY 163M, QHY 7 濾鏡輪, Optolong LRGB and SHO 濾鏡, QHY OAG, Skywatcher EQ6, ZWO ASI 120MM Mini 導星相機, (Ha + OIII) 24hrs
