i don't seem to be able to find any recent update to this rumour.... could 社长 please provide a link?

Actually, the Chilean lodge has dobs for rent. So there is no need to bring big dobs. You just need to bring the small scopes for photography and mounts. From their website:
"We can rent some dobsonian telescopes, either a 45cm or 33cm which we can place near to your lodge. These telescopes are equipped with Nagler and Ethos eyepieces."

I guess we won't be going to Tibet in summer as it is its rainy season:

Pleiades is also interested in going to San Pedro de Atacama with us if we go, but he needs to work harder rather than taking holidays all the time![]()
I am very interested in going to the places you mentioned. As you know that a teacher has very non-flexible holiday schedule, I think I can only go to Antarctica when I am 60 years old. Currently, I am planning a trip to Falkland Islands in Christmas.

He and I seem to share the feeling that natural scenery is as important as, if not more than, the stars. So we are interested in going to the Ayers Rock in Alice Spring and also the Atacama desert in Chile. I would probably hesitate to go to places where the only thing we can do is to watch the stars, and there is absolutely nothing to do if the weather doesn't cooperates.
If I just go for the stars, Australia is much cheaper.

David 寫:Looks like it is 22-26 July 2012 rather than early July. I must be in Hong Kong on 20 July for the exam result release. The moon age after 26 July is no good because it is close to first quarter. The week from about 10 August 2012 would be better.....
Or may be you go to visit some peole in late July/early August. Then we go Easter Island first for 3-4 days, then we go San Pedro next, spending 6 nights there.
May be we can just go to Australia and join Tony if he is free in August (Ayer's Rock? Perth?). Or I can just go to Iceland which doesn't need any matching with moon age since ....there is no complete dark sky there in July and August.
My Falkland trip doesn't quite work out this Christmas because of problems with flight arrangement......need to book earlier next year. Falkland is better in December rather than July. Forget Falkland for stargazing. The weather is not that promising. If I go there, it will be for the wildlife.
pleiades 寫:I'm happy to either plan - Tiber, Chile, Australia, etc etc
will reserve my leaves once we have confirmed the time
the weather in August in Australia is a concern ... there were a lot of rainy days here sine June this year ...
no clear sky in Sydney, the Greater Western NSW, or along the coast down to Melbourne for a while ...
i was quite surprised there are actually a lot to do in San Pedro de Atacama
by the way, I am really interested to join your survey group to Tibet!!
i want to do a documentary on Tibet - the people, the nature, and of course the sky : )
