General description how to use a Herschelwedge
1. Only 5 % of the light going towards the eyepiece, 95% of the light going into the red rear plate where a very rough surface is spreading off the light . Our experience so far show that by using the Herschelwedge in a 130mm APO all day long under Florida Sun at 70° Farenheit / +20° Celsius show that the red rear cover is getting very warm , but not hot enough to burn your fingers. Be careful in real hot summers with touching the red rear cover
2, the Herschelwedge can be used in Refractors and Schiefspieglers only, never use them in a Schidt Cassegrain or Maksutov Cassegrain or Newtonian telescope. Never use the Herschwelwedge in a telescope with inner plastic parts like plastic baffles, they can bend and burn
3, Light entering the front objective is cool and has the same temperature then outside air temperature. At the objective the light is starting to produce a beam which gets more and more narrow and more and more intensively as close you come to the focus point. Also as closer the beam come to the focus as hotter it gets. We have long time practical experience in using Herschelwedges in Refractors up to 10" diameter without additional front filter, yes its safe!
4, visual solar observers usual want a 1/100,000 % light blocking, that caused by the wedge plus ND 3,0 Filter ( 1000 x ) and ND 1,0 ( 100 x ). By going up in the magnification you will notice this pure visual image is getting to darker and you wish to have more brightness. To get a nice variation of brightness we recommend therefore the filter combination ND 3,0 + Top Pol. This allows you to adjust the image brightness from photographic brightness to visual brightness. Imagers using older DSLR Cameras ( non Digital ) may want even a better brightness and buying therefore an additional ND 0.6 Filter to be used with the ND 3,0
5, Positions: insert the Herschelwedge into your focuser. Next step: Take your eyepiece and screw in the Top Pol Filter. Then screw the ND 3.0 on the Top Pol Filter, so the order is : focuser > Herschwelwedge > ND 3.0 > Top Pol > Eyepiece.
6, Brightness adjustment: the Top Pol Filter does by rotating the eyepiece ( so the Top Pol also rotates) a polarization with the Herschelwedge prism and you see a brighter or dimmer image, just as you like to set your personal preference.
7, Warning: do not mix up the order of the filters, ND 3.0 always closer to the wedge, Top Pol always closer to the eyepiece. See drawing.
8, Baader Solar Continuum Filter
http://www.baader-planetarium.de/sektio ... _continuum. Its a high contrast filter showing the sun in green color. Its much better then a standard green filter. It would be used on the Herschelwedge with the ND 3.0 , range : Herschelwedge > ND 3.0 > Solarkontinuum > eyepiece. It provides a correct visual brightness
9, Filters: our testing, visual and optical bench testing shows that most filters have lower quality. Why using a high quality telescope with a high quality Herschelwedge (both are not cheap) and safe money for cheap bad quality filters, which are hurting the final image. Therefore we recommend and offering only the best possible and available filters on today’s market > BW Schneider Kreuznach / Germany, not cheap, but the best
10, The optical surfaces of the Herschelwedges are not critical, clean them the same way as you clean your eyepieces.
