剛看完兩套非常值得推薦的DVD，由英國廣播公司BBC出品，由粒子物理學家Brian Cox主持，我認為是十多年前BBC的The Planets系列以來最佳的天文紀錄片，也是自八十年代Carl Sagan的Cosmos – A Personal Voyage以來啟發性最高的系列。

Carl Sagan的Cosmos – A Personal Voyage是當年收視很高的天文節目，為當代帶來天文熱。據維基百科，這系列有5億人收看。我小時候，片集在星期日翡翠台早上11時播出，叫「宇宙奇觀」。我最喜歡的是航行者號的一集，看到木星和土星的美麗相片，配合Carl Sagan充滿詩意的介紹，完全能感受他對天文的愛，對宇宙的嚮往。此外，有關相對論和火星的兩集，把相對論的奇怪現象在電視展示出來，讓觀眾穿梭於水手谷中……我有很深的印像。

隨著電腦的進步，新一代的天文節目引入大量電腦模擬，例如BBC的Space-The Final Frontier和Discovery Channel的Universe系列，但這些片集都缺乏一個既是科學家又具魅力的主持，那些電腦模擬太多大濫，花花巧巧，剪接頻密，好似非要有Michael Bay電影的感覺不可。你可能會吸收到新知識，覺得天文好「勁」，涉及不少很高能量、大規模、爆炸性的過程，但你不會覺得天文很美，或覺得節目有啟發性。

BBC的The Planets (1999)系列 (港名「日月星宿」) 是較好的，但已是十多年前的事。片集的節奏比較慢，有大量Archive footage，有很多天文學家的訪問。電腦模擬也是比較慢，在弦樂配合下，你會覺得很有美感。

The Planets的時代，沒有卡西尼號，沒有Enceladus的冰噴泉，沒有登陸泰坦的片段，沒有火星探險車的發現。是時候拍攝新的天文系列，Brian Cox的The Wonders of the Solar Systems (2010) 正回應這個需要。

Brian Cox小時候也是看Carl Sagan的Cosmos，也承認受他影響很深。本片充滿Carl Sagan的影子，例如他說話的方式，句子如詩，影像如畫。

這片也同時擁有很獨特的風格。首先，片中超過一半時間都是在地球，Brian Cox帶你走到地球多處極美的地方，用那些景象比喻太空的環境，令觀眾能完全明白那些那些星球的環境是什麼，好似Brian Cox和你就在太空一樣。例如，他坐潛水艇落深海，觀察深海動物，然後帶出木星衛星Eupora的巨大地下海洋可能有相似的情境；他帶我們到冰島看噴泉，模擬土星Enceladus的冰噴泉；帶你到美國Scabland看洪水沖刷出的地形，然後展示火星相似的地形；他又坐飛機帶你飛到地面18km高的地方，感受地球薄薄的大氣；帶你到極地看冰河、看夏威夷火山、冰島冰洞內的生物、智利和非洲沙漠等等……每個地方都是無限美麗壯觀。這簡直是一個旅遊特輯，由地球開始作跳板，再躍升到太空。

此外，這系列不避談物理，而且那些物理不是用花花巧巧的電腦模擬配合解釋，很多時只是Brian Cox望著鏡頭，用手勢配合，最多加一些石頭、沙、杯等幫助！這顯示Brian Cox的無比信心和他輕易把複雜概念用簡單語言表達的才華。有些概念不容易解釋，如用軌道共振(Orbital Resonance)解釋土星環結構、Late-Heavy Bombardment和行星遷移(Planetary Migration)等，Brian Cox都能深入淺出地解釋。

Brain Cox說他希望這片好像電影般，片中每一個鏡頭都美得可以放在電腦做Wallpaper，在弦樂的配樂下，星宿之美盡顯。

片集在英國播出後，反應很好，Brian Cox出街經常有人認出，入選People雜誌的Sexiest Men Alive！同事間也有些尷尬，有人見他失踪數天，問他去了那裡，原來他和BBC到了夏威夷！(“But if I'm off in Hawaii filming for the BBC, it doesn't look great.”)

I have bought the region 3 version of the DVD for my school because it has chinese subtitles. However, the narrator has changed from Brian Cox to a guy that sounds very boring. It turns the whole documentary into something that makes me sleep.

If you can live with English subtitles, go for the region 1 version. It makes a huge difference.

高清台現在有星期六及日有播，但中文配音同樣非常悶蛋。

或者是版權問題 region 3 香港正版把所有 Brian Cox 出現的畫面刪去了，編輯把原來片段加以重新剪接，有部分鏡頭可能是重新拍的，並且加入了旁述，可以說是使用原來的劇本進行一次再創作，問題是有好些 Cox 講解得很詳細的部分被匆匆帶過了，而且整體欠缺神采。因此，還是 1 區的原來版本好看。

正在整理錄影機中的錄影，刪除多錄的前後部分及廣告，在高清台播的似乎是 3 區的版本，不過卻發現後幾集見到 Cox 現身，可能我只看了DVD 影碟第二集中的大半集太早下結論，或者要花點時間仔細比較才能知道手上的三個版本到底是怎樣。

It is amazing that BBC would really take the trouble to redo the whole programme with other scientists and narrator. Having other scientists saying almost exactly what Brian Cox originally said (in some sections of the programme) just looks very strange to me.

Me do, I don't understand why they do that, as an example, there is some footage shoot besides a geyser (間歇泉). In the original version, Cox stand next to a geyser and talking, the region 3 version have a female scientist besides the geyser talking with more or less the same thing. I inclined to believed that it is planned, i.e. the footages with different scientist were taken at the same time, otherwise, it cannot justify the cost for redoing.
