Just back from my first total lunar eclipse observation with students and it was quite different from my expectation. I'll upload more photos later.

Yes! Really clear sky! The transparency was high, but the seeing was not very good at Hung Hom. This disappointed me a bit as I did imgaing.

A very ugly picture that tries to reconstruct the shadow of earth. Nothing makes sense here and I'll try to do a better one when I have time. The pictures were shot by four students working together.

We set everything in a rush as it was mainly observational activity with more than 50 students. The polar alignment was very poor and the moon drifted quickly in the camera. So the students picked a large ISO, resulting in very noisy pics that are not very sharp.

Never mind if u take it as an exercise. By all mean it is a students' group work. Very educational!

It look like a deep partial lunar eclipse rather than total. The moon's limb should align in straight line...???
Anyway, great job.

Exactly, that's why I say it is ugly.

The moons should be better oriented this time.

Thanks. I forgot to put up a pic of 18"UC.

Actually, I think the view in the 18 inch is not particularly stunning. I find the binocular view and the naked eye view the best as we can also enjoy the stars around it. Also, the red colour seems most vibrant there. Many students also liked the view in the finderscope! The power of 18 inch came when watching Jupiter and DSO when the moon was eclisped.

The C8+binoviewer view was also disappointing as the magnification was too big. The whole moon could not fit in.

Next time, I'll probably binoviewer with the APM 80/480 scope and forget about the 18 inch. A 12 inch dobs is good enough visually for big activity and more students could watch while standing on the ground rather than on the 18 inch box. I will just keep the setup small as the big toys don't add to the fun as much as I wish.

It was a great experience and what a great show we had that night. I wish we don't need to wait for 10 more years until the next one with clear sky.

月食可以等十年,但金星凌日等不了100年,你有何打算?

It is school day, so I'll just enjoy it with my students if the weather cooperates. Luckily, many people in Hong Kong saw the last one in 2004.

It is my school day too! I will enjoy it with my students too. I found the transition would be interesting.
