If you are turned on by lunar observation, you will find that it provides unique observational experiences that other objects cannot give:
1. If you view M42 today, it will be the same tomorrow. For moon, it is different everyday. In fact, if you want to see a particular site on the moon at good illumination, you only have 24 chances in a year. How many of them will be clear nights? Even less....
So, it can take years before you can really view (and image) a reasonable number of excellent landmarks on the moon.
2. Moon is the only object with clear surface details. There are mountains to climb, shadows to be amazed.
3. Moon can be enjoyed in urban areas, no matter how strong the light pollution is.
However, to really enjoy the moon, you need to know something about what you are looking at. You need some background information. Otherwise, every part of the moon is just like another. I have made a website for this purpose a few years ago:
http://www.imsc.edu.hk/pages/moon/It is a shame that many amateurs view the moon as a nuisance rather than an amazing object for us to explore.
