I used the HEQ6 / EQ6 Pro (the white one!) both on a tripod at star parties, and on my permanent pier in my observatory, with a full frame SBIG STL11000XME camera and Pentax refractor and got brilliant (and published in mags) results.
Whilst the PE of the EQ6 isn't particularly good, what it is very good at is responding to guider commands. Result? Everything guides out perfectly. I had nothing other than pin sharp stars 100% of the time.
I'd far rather a mount with bad PE that guides properly than one with lower PE that didn't...
The tripod, whilst a little basic, is good and sturdy too. It sat in a field in Norfolk, didn't slip/flex, and worked well.
I changed the thin dovetail to a Robin Casady saddle to take the industry standard losmandy dovetails.
My only real gripe with the mount is the altitude adjuster screws are rubbish. Cheap bendy metal, and just - well - rubbish. I replaced them with stainless handwheel bolts from AstroDevelopments, much better. Polar adjustment was then a breeze. The star moved in the direction you moved it by way of the screw, not one way then the other a bit, then slips a little etc. through the screw bending. Also, the polar scope isn't particularly good, nor is it aligned well with the mount, and also the LED illuminator is far too bright as it washes out the field of view - but there again you should be drift aligning for real accuracy, and not relying on a polar scope.
Mechanical build is adequate, but there are things like bits of metal flashing on castings etc. Looking close up you can see faults in the finish but from 3yds away, or in the dark, you wouldn't know.
Now the other good bit about this mount, goto accuracy.... I was stunned. After a good drift align, I slewed from completely one end of the sky to another, traversing across the meridian on the way (scope flipped), to a small planetary neb, and thought "if this makes it into the fov I'll eat my hat". Well I couldn't decide if I should put ketchup or sweet'n'sour sauce on my woolly hat since not only did it end up in the fov, it was bang in the centre.
The mount slews with a nice sound too - far nicer than some of the coffee grinders out there. It has a strange 'musical' sound when tracking, but you get used to it. It's quiet anyway.
For less than £1k, you can't go wrong, and you get a free powerpack sealed lead acid thing with a fluorescent light to boot.
Rich Best (a member here, experienced imager also) owned a HEQ6 too (we bought them the same day to try them!!) and will also no doubt echo what I'm saying.
Little niggles with them aside (adjuster screws, polar scope) they're a great mount. Synta is turning out some nice stuff. Hope they keep it up.
Regards, Rob
