The next generation of Solar telescopes continues to Evolve...

Attached is a picture of the new LS80THa with the internal double stacking DSII. Here is a bit of info... The image is shown with the optional DSII added.

The LS80T/PT (pressure tuned) is a complete and dedicated Solar Telescope with an Image Scale of 408. (Image scale is calculated by the effective image size at the focal plain and the clear aperture of the scope.) A precision aligned ED refractor with a fully un-obstructed 80mm optical aperture.

This package provides a significant step up into the Intermediary category of Daytime Solar Observing, Maintaining the most advanced technology of Doppler True Tuning for fine adjustment of the center wavelength, allowing research of the Sun’s disk and surface details at increased image scale. Prominences, flares, super granulation, filaments, and active regions will be observed.

The LS80THa package is fully upgradeable with several options including the NEW evolutionary Dual Internal Stack Etalon System (DSII). The DSII eliminates the need for an external double stack etalon reducing cost and eliminating obstructions. The system is 100% un-obstructed. The band pass is reduced to <0.5 Angstroms. See the Sun's weather in stunning high definition.

LS80T/PT Specifications: (single stacked)

LS80Ha/PT/DSII (double stack module)
- The LS80T can be internally double stacked (see LS80T/DSII) at time of purchase or anytime thereafter.
- Double stacking provides a truly enhanced high definition view of the Sun's surface details.
- The LS80T/PT does not need to be returned to the factory for double stacking.
- Retail: US$1,495.00

1) The DSII will soon be available on ALL Lunt dedicated scopes including the LS152T!!

2) This same module will also be available as a rear end addition to the Celestron C11 and C14. This package will include the Lunt True ERF to safely aperture the scope to the appropriate size, removing both UV and IR energy from the optical path. A straight thru BF will be integrated into the module for enhanced viewing.

There’s more......

The LS80T/PT is available in many optional variations. Here are a few examples to aid in description and part numbers for pricing

True Doppler Tuning allows for a shift into and away from the user. Adding a 3D like component to the viewing experience.
While it has minimal effect on proms due to their being at the edge of the disk, it does have an effect on filaments and active regions on the surface.

While looking at a filament at the center of the Sun the user has the ability to Doppler shift from the base of the filament to the tip, following the filament thru its structure toward you and away from you. Allowing for enhanced visual and imaging capability for the observer as well as a research tool for the avid hobbyist.

The pressure tuning system provides an order of magnitude more precision to the tuning of the desired features.

No-one brings you closer to our nearest Star than Lunt Solar Systems... The next generation of Solar Instrumentation.

Wow! I guess this LS80T will outperform unobstructed LS70F + any APO. Any comment? The price is reasonable too.

it's LS75F, not 70.

I doubt if anyone can see the resolution or brightness difference between 80 and 75, so it's back to basic again - PT vs Front mounted filter.

But I agree that this version is good for school / education purpose for it's all-in-one design. But note the weight at 14lbs is not light either.

What else can I sell to get this.....

It will be interesting to see the performance of internal double stack.....with my LS152T!

no la, once you get a LS152T, you won't be attracted to a LS80T, right?

Or trade in your Mewlon with me and get a LS80T?

In terms of resolution, I guess hard to tell the diffrence. It should be dimmer than LS75F because of double stack system. I guess in terms of contrast, it will beat LS75F because of double stack again.

Not need to buy this one! u have LS152T & it's resolution & brightness blow away LS80T for hundreded light yrs!

you know the uniqueness of my unobstructed LS75F? It's called Signature series as this is signed by Andy Lunt, special made to 1/100 wave accuracry, and tuned to narrow bandwidth to give the best compromised between surface and prominence details. With double stack, you see more surface detail and lose the prominence, also too dim for photography, for single single you lose surface details.

So my unobstructed LS75F not only of higher quality, but in certain sense, it replace single and double system by one filter, then I can use it on different focal length, e.g., 80/480, 80/600, 80/1200 for different purpose - eclipse, full disk, higher magnification.... 8-)

The term image scale is being provided to help describe how one scope compares to another.

As Focal Length increases, the size of the image at the focal plane also increases. However, if there isn't an increase in aperture the effective resolution will be lost.

I have been trying to explain to people why a 100 scope is better than a 60mm scope.

What people need to understand is that we are looking at one object of a given size and brightness. Unlike nighttime objects that change in size and intensity etc. we can make comparisons from one scope to another based on image size and aperture size.. ie: image scale.

For our scopes the image scale is as follows..

Focal length divided by 110 (approx F ratio of Sun) multiplied by aperture.

This also provides a good base for explaining why one scope costs more than another... Etalon size etc are relevant but for internal systems people don't know what that is.

When going up in image scale you go from looking at detail to looking within detail. The larger the image scale, the higher the magnification for a given brightness...

Hope this helps...

The internal module is interesting, since it could be used with C11 or even C14 with matched ERF!!! That would make it crazy... C8 is big enough, now it mentions C14!!!

actually you can apply a telecentric lens with any telescope system and produce a <35mm parallel beam to the a LS35T front etalon for similar purpose.

I also interested to know the module performance on the other larger aperture telescope ( not only SCT type).
As it can be tune manually by hand, it eventually can tune to the Ha line's wings faster than other existing rare mounted Ha filter.
And one more thing is, it no longer restricted to the F30 critirial for best performance.

what aperture you consider as ultimate for solar work under practical seeing?

I am not sure...as the usual daylight seeing is just about 3~4", thus a 60mm telescope is more than enough for solar work.
If we are assuming the daylight seeing can reach as low as night time seeing at 0.5", from this point, then the ultimate aperture should be about 203mm (8").

per David's experience, he found LS152T performs better than LS100T under his environment - sea level, inside the city crowded with high rise building around.

may be we can get even better results with a 203mm telescope at a better site in Hong Kong.

I guess the shorter exposure time helps a bit in beating the effect of poor seeing for large-aperture instrument. It depends on which factor is more important on a particular day.

what my guess is, there is limit to this, e.g., there may not be practical difference between 1/1000 and 1/500s exposure in beating the seeing. Because the "air cell" do not moving that fast.....

So if we can't get better result with exposure shorter than something like 1/60 or 1/100, we can't get any better going further shorter?

From what I tried before, an exposure of 1/100 sec. still not fast enough to "freeze" particular part of the Sun.
As my current setup not allow me to use expsoure shorter than 1/100 sec., thus I don't how short is sufficient to beat the seeing.

ok, 1/100s is not short enough for solar work.....

for night time imaging work, under 9/10 seeing at Hong Kong, my trial was 1/19s is not too long for Jupiter, i.e., for smaller image scale at 1/30s vs larger image scale at 1/19s, the later one is still better.
