Recently, I have been searching for places for watching aurora during lunar new year holidays in the next few years. The more I read, the more I understand the need for luck. Not only do you need clear sky, you also need the sun to put on a show. Chasing solar eclipse seems easy by comparison!
So far, I seem to have narrowed my choice to three places which are all below the aurora oval and are all popular destinations for aurora watching:
1. Fairbanks, Alaska
Very cold in February (-30 degree Celsius!) and there seems to be nothing to do there in winter....except a hot spring. Chance of clear sky is better in spring than autumn, with about 8 clear days and 7 rainy days in February on average. Flight from Hong Kong is most expensive.
2. Tromso, Norway
A relatively big city with enough to entertain you if there is no aurora. There is, however, on average 17 days of rain in February!
3. Levi, Finland
A place for skiing even if there is no aurora. 7 days of rain on average in February.
The latest prediction for solar maximum is summer 2013, and some predict that solar activity may become low for an indefinite length of time in the future. So act quick.
